Oh, I can imagine that a majority of them were, in fact, real people. It took me off-guard that some of the more screentime-friendly candidates that were fired were fairly well-established comedic actors that gained their reputation from that style of humor Apatow is now stereotyped for.

I won't complain their casting choice as I like their style of humor and they didn't do poorly with their roles, but it was still a surprise.

<a href="#comment-117" rel="nofollow">@Don </a>

Yeah, there is a certain shared aesthetic between Reitman and Aptow I think (both being ambitious and adequate, but lacking perhaps a signature sense of style). However, the people being fired were, according to what I have read in several places, real people: http://www.awardsdaily.com/?p=17683

One of the interesting things I did notice about Up In The Air was that quite a few comedic actors were taken as the "firees", not to mention a relative played by everyone's favorite loser, Danny McBridge. At one point I was expecting it to leak promo material for an Apatow film. I am thankful that I was completely wrong.
