Review:

Adam (John Cusack), Lou (Rob Corddry), and Nick (Craig Robinson) are lifelong friends who are unhappy with their lives, who along with Adam’s nephew Jacob (Clark Duke), find themselves trapped in 1986, via the hot tub time machine, as their younger selves, reliving their past and missed opportunities, with a possibility (or impossibility?) of changing their present/future.

Much of the film’s strength is the fact that it takes place in the 80’s–the funky hair, the music, the slang, and the nostalgic factor. Loosely based on Back to the Future’s time traveling plotline, it also pokes fun at Quantum Leap, and various other 80’s films. Added to that is male-bonding comedy about lovable losers reliving their pinnacle moments of their past, and to the film’s credit, those moments provide poignancy.

This is a sci-fi B-movie-style broad comedy. This film is directed by Steve Pink who wrote the screenplay for Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. I wished he had also written this film because this film could’ve used some of his sharp wit. While the film is mostly funny overall, occasional jokes do fall flat and some parts could’ve used one more draft of rewrite. Better or for worse, much of the humor (although not surprisingly) involve toilet and sexual humor, with some gratuitous drug use and nudity.

This isn’t sophisticated stuff, but this film isn’t trying to be. It’s called Hot Tub Time Machine, after all. The film works because the characters are likeable and the time travel concept is fun. John Cusack plays his usual, likeable everyman role. Lou (Rob Corddry) provides much of the extreme, wild humor. There are fun geeky references, familiar faces, and nostalgic elements for those of us who grew up in that era–the younger generation may have a hard time fully appreciating some of that. Nevertheless, the filmmakers know it’s silly stuff and they milk and revel in the concept to its fullest extent, which is all one can ask for.

Review:

The title of Extract comes from what the main character (Joel) sells: flavor extract. He is the founder of a local factory that makes nothing but flavor extract and loves talking about the stuff the same way a Trekker loves talking about the Enterprise. When one of his workers busts a nut at work (literally), things begin to get irksome as a pretty young con artist steps in to push Joel, his business, and his home life, into the ground.

Mike Judge has a talent for noticing characters that are absurd but strangely true to life, and this movie takes no exception with the minor roles of this film. If you ever worked in a menial manual labor job, you might recognize quite a few characters in the movie such as: the associate who keeps “voluntarily” soliciting you to go to events you don’t want to go to, the guy who remembers nobody’s name despite how long he’s been there, the musician who seems to be into really obscure musical niches, the gabby old lady who’s always been there and does nothing but gossip and blame the silent and unculpable immigrant worker for everything. There’s a lot there that I have (unfortunately) seen and experienced at one point or another, and I couldn’t help but praise Mike Judge for seeing this.

While it has its share of scenes that are funny just to watch, the humor as a result tends to borderline enough to make it a little too cerebral for the people looking for a quick laugh, and a little too primitive for folks wanting something witty, and I think this will not make it too popular. Still, considering how Mike Judge’s films tend to go cult as time passes, I can see this film’s popularity gaining steam once it hits DVD.

If you do find this film funny, you might also want to check out “The Promotion,” which is also fairly low-key, and strangely true-to-life (that, or my life is very, very, demented).

Review:

As a lifelong fan of Woodstock-era artists like The Who and Jimi Hendrix, I looked forward to this movie, an uncharacteristically lighthearted affair from director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain). It’s inspired by the true story of Elliot Tiber (renamed Jake Teichberg in the film), a New York City interior designer who organized the iconic festival in order to save his parents’ failing motel.

One of the things I enjoyed about this movie was its focus on the work that went into putting on the festival. Amazingly, we don’t see any concert footage or meet any actors called on to play Hendrix or Joplin. It has a documentary-like feel in such scenes as when we see Teichberg (played by Demetri Martin) riding on the back of a cop’s motorcycle in order to get into the actual concert or when we see Max Yasgur (well-played by Eugene Levy) agreeing to let the promoters hold the concert on his land while offering them some of his farm-made chocolate milk. The film is at its best when we’re among the fans and we’re seeing the show put together. We meet some colorful characters during the journey, including Liev Schreiber as a transvestite security guard and Dan Fogler as the leader of a postmodern thespian troupe that lives in Teichberg’s parents’ barn and manages to cause a ruckus among Bethel’s more conservative types, who feared the hippies would destroy the town.

The film also includes some interludes involving Teichberg’s tumultuous relationship with his mother (Imelda Staunton), who kavetches throughout the film, while his father is more accepting and drinks beer with the hippies. While Staunton has some good one-liners, this part of the story feels underdeveloped, and the final scene doesn’t have the emotional impact for which it seems to be reaching. It feels secondary to the festival. Still, I enjoyed the film on the basis of the realistic crowd shots, the likable Teichberg, the vibrant supporting cast, and that groovy soundtrack.

Review:

Politics has two faces: on the one hand, there are the smiling buffoons dedicated to convincing the rest of us that they know what they are talking about and on the other, there are the conniving and plotting backroom sleazebags who tell the buffoons what to do. Such is the premise of the blisteringly funny and abrasive British comedy, In the Loop.
Ostensibly a fictional tale about the build-up to an obviously unjustified war (read Iraq), In the Loop refuses to trade in the gentle barbs that blight so many recent political satires, preferring instead to strap its main protagonists down and go to work on them with a blowtorch of righteous indignation. (That blowtorch, by the way, is delivered via some of the most obscene and inventive dialogue to play out on the big screen since Tarantino first hit the scene.)

The action starts off in London just as the drum beat of war is gathering pace. Hopping back and forth across the Atlantic more often than Jason Bourne armed with his frequent flyer miles, In the Loop follows the main characters through committee meetings and conference calls with a handheld camera style that gives a constant sense of urgency and chaos to the rapidly unfolding proceedings.

The multi-layered script is made all the more impressive when you consider the huge variety of characters in the movie. Some of the more memorable characters include a cool and collected – but ultimately cowardly – Colin Powell-like US General (played by the mighty James Gandolfini), and an unforgettably x-rated-ranting British prime ministerial press chief. All are equally convincing in both their comical value as well as in their chilling indifference to the implications of their actions.

You don’t need to know anything about politics to enjoy this movie. You don’t even have to worry about it being left or right wing propaganda. All you have to do is strap yourself in for 106 minutes of sheer, unadulterated comedy excellence as you laugh your ass off at the state of how we organize our political world. In the Loop makes clear that it is not so much a question of lies versus truth, but rather it is a question of heavily armed lunatics running the asylum. In this regard, In the Loop is a worthy and equally scathing successor to Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove.

-Paul Meade

Review:

(500) Days of Summer is the story of Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his year-and-a-half on again/off again relationship with Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel). Tom, a greeting card writer, falls head over heels for Summer, a new administrator at the same greeting card company, and is convinced that she is the one he’s been waiting for all of his life. We’re told that Tom believes that he’ll never be truly happy until he finds “the one”—hence the importance of discovering Summer Finn—and he’s carried this belief with him his entire life because of 80’s British pop music and a misreading of the film The Graduate. Summer, on the other hand, doesn’t really believe in love, at least not the kind of love Tom believes in, but insists on taking Tom on a ride that he and audiences will never forget.
Audiences also will have a hard time forgetting the performances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. Gordon-Levitt’s Tom, wonderfully balanced with charm and sympathy, paired with Deschanel’s free-spirited and whimsical Summer makes their repartee so much fun to watch. They execute their parts so well, it’s really difficult to imagine anyone else playing these characters.

This script, by neophytes Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, has Best Original Screenplay written all over it. It’s a combination of the best of the youthful, hip, music-induced flicks Garden State and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist with the originality and freshness of Little Miss Sunshine. The “author’s note” at the beginning of the film implies that the author did, in fact, live this story. And there’s just enough realism in the script to believe that, perhaps, he did.

With such a splendid cast and such a solid script in place, Marc Webb could have just phoned in the direction. However, for his first major motion picture, this music video director decided to not let his considerable visual acumen go to waste. And though he uses every trick in the book—animation, split-screen screen, infectious music—it doesn’t feel overwrought.
Webb’s Los Angeles backdrop is the real winner here, and thanks to Webb, anybody under 40 who doesn’t want to visit L.A. after this film doesn’t have a pulse.

-Sam Henderson

Review:

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard is a briskly paced, vulgar comedy that’s sure to offend. If you’re the right mindset, it’ll also entertain. I do urge conservative, PC-types to stay away from this movie, as there are quite a few moments that border (or more accurately, embrace) bad taste.

Jeremy Piven plays Don Ready, the charismatic leader of a sales team who travels to different car dealerships in order to help move their merchandise. At the beginning of the film, we’re introduced to Selleck Motors, a failing dealership that employs characters like Dick, a World War II veteran who spouts racial and homophobic epithets as if they were second nature, and Teddy Jang, who falls victim to Dick’s prejudices in an uncomfortable but hilarious scene. The owner, Ben Selleck, hires Ready’s team to help them move 200 cars over the Fourth of July weekend.

Piven’s sales team is the backbone of the movie. His staff includes Babs, a vixen who becomes infatuated with Selleck’s 10-year-old son, who looks like he’s 30 thanks to a genetic disorder. This infatuation provides some of the movie’s funniest moments. Ving Rhames brings a lot of his dry humor to the table as Jibby, a 42-year-old man who’s had a lot of sexual experiences, but has never “made love” to a woman (it’s only natural that he’ll find it in the movie). David Koechner fumes more and more as Selleck makes repeated passes at him.

In addition to providing laughs, the quick movie actually makes the sales process looks exciting. There is a virtuoso sequence as we watch the salespeople in action, using underhanded techniques such as the “Nigerian buyback” and there’s a sexually charged scene involving Babs and a male customer that must be seen to be believed. The reason I mention this is I sold luggage in a department store every summer while I was in college, and I found the job boring and the customers annoying, and I approached the job like it was something I “had” to do in order to make spending money. Had I seen this movie while in college, I may not have fallen in love with the job, but I may have been inspired to work a little harder at the process of “selling,” as opposed to just “making the sale.” All I can say is this movie sold me.

Review:

Adam is 29 years old, living in an apartment he once shared with his father, and is a relatively good-looking man. He gets blatantly affectionate looks from women, is well-dressed, and is a hard worker at his job as an engineer at a local toy firm. With his awkwardness towards the opposite sex and his tendency to ramble about his passions, you would initially think he had the makings of a 40-Year-Old Virgin, but chances are you would never imagine he had something like Asperger’s Syndrome unless he said so.

When Beth, a budding children’s author and daughter to an influential executive accountant, moves in and meets the awkward fellow by chance, she finds herself entranced by him and, like the very satellites Adam rambles on, they begin to push and pull against each other in an orbital dance with each other that leads both into a predictable trajectory and impact you expect from a romance film, but with the trappings of a convincing relationship between a woman finding her own way in her world and a man learning to understand his own.

I have to say that the acting throughout the film is really good. It seems that every character with more than one dialogue in the role has at least one moment to pull out at least one good scene in the film (Frankie Faison steals quite a few as Adam’s mentor-like friend, Harlan). While Rose Byrne does not seem to shine as well as her counterpart Hugh Dancy, she more than makes up for it in the later half.

Kudos should also go to the cinematography for the film, where you can tell care was placed in shooting the location and getting the most visually-appealing scenes and compositions you could hope for in a film of this nature.

Review:

Camper than Liberace in hot-pants, Brüno is Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest “undercover” comic creation and controversy = cash generator. The movie focuses on the crass antics of Brüno Gehard, a fictional Austrian fashionista with a penchant for both Adolf Hitler and evermore extreme forms of anal intrusion. Fired from his job as host of Funkyzeit, Brüno sets his sights on conquering the dizzy heights of American celebrity culture.

Once this obviously frivolous story has been set up and the action moves to America – via a brief trip to the Middle East to meet some alleged terrorists – the fun really begins. There are many hilarious set-piece scenes throughout Brüno, including the breathtaking cage-fight finale, but the standout scene for me has to be Brüno’s parading of his adopted African baby on some sub-Jerry Springer talk-show. As we are in on the joke, our immediate temptation is to howl with laughter as Bruno shockingly informs the predominantly African American audience that he gave the baby a “traditional African name – OJ”. In fairness to the audience though, their outrage was actually proportionate (given that they thought they were witnessing someone who genuinely treated his baby as a fashion accessory). This audience, however, were never the true intended targets of Cohen’s satire, rather, it was the celebrity adoptions of Madonna and Angelina Jolie – and the ensuing media mayhem – that he was gunning for.

That is a trend that exists through all of Cohen’s work: he delivers the maximum amount of outrage per a square satirical inch both in the foreground of the action and also in the background, where the bigger picture lurks. He gives the bigots what they want on camera (which is to re-affirm their petrified world view), and in doing so he reveals their absurd and isolated thinking. Yet lest you imagine this is a movie with a cause in mind, you better think again. Cohen does not deliver the certainties that causes require, instead choosing to walk along a cinematic tightrope of chaotic comedy on one hand and stage-managed cynicism on the other. Sometimes he does stumble and leave you yearning for the sight of Borat in his slick green Speedos. Such feelings quickly pass however, as the prospect of Brüno spreading more of his hot comedy seed across your face keeps you glued to your seat throughout.

Review:

Funny People is the third directorial effort from Judd Apatow. While this movie has the same amount and degree of laughter as Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, I felt this one was a lot deeper and darker than those two efforts.

Adam Sandler stars in this movie as George Simmons, a Sandleresque comedian who has achieved fame and prosperity, but is essentially a lonely man. He begins to reevaluate his life when he’s informed that he is dying of a rare blood disorder. Seth Rogen is Ira Wright, a struggling comedian who writes good jokes, but whose awkward on-stage delivery keeps him from progressing to the big time.

Simmons’ disease prompts him to return to his roots by performing at one of the clubs where he got his start, and by chance, he happens to catch Wright performing. Seeing some potential in the young comic, Simmons decides to hire Wright as his joke writer/assistant.

The routines performed by the comics are hilarious, and the interplay between the two leads is fantastic. Rogen slimmed down for this role, and he’s not playing the usual slacker he normally embodies. He’s passionate and determined in his ambition to make it to the next level, and we root for him to do so.

I’ve always been a fan of Sandler’s work, and he conveys the same darkness and complexity that he brought to Punch Drunk Love. His character has made some bad decisions in his life and is not a very nice person as evidenced by the way he treats his new assistant. Still, we identify with his pain and loneliness, and we root for him to get what he wants.

His driving desire is to get back together with Laura (well-played by Leslie Mann), his ex-fiance whom he still loves, but lost several years earlier due to his philandering ways. The final act of the movie involves Simmons and Wright driving up to San Francisco, where she’s settled into the domestic life with an absent husband and two daughters. Her marriage has been tumultuous for years, and the arrival of the two comedians brings this tension to the surface. At the risk of spoiling a plot point, I’ll say that this subplot ends on a surprising note, but one that’s entirely fitting to the behavior of these characters.

Funny People has a number of laughs, but the script also makes us think about human nature, mortality, and the essence of friendship. It’s Apatow’s (and Sandler’s) best work yet.

-Craig Wynne

Review:

When my friend Rob proposed that we see Year One, I jumped at the chance. Here we had Jack Black and Michael Cera, two of my favorite actors, collaborating with Harold Ramis, a comic legend. Where could they go wrong?

The answer: the script. Year One is such an unfocused, unfunny mess I don’t even know where to begin tearing it apart. The movie naturally takes place in “year one,” in which Black and Cera are two hunter/gatherers. Black, in all his manic wisdom, manages to eat the “forbidden fruit” (Biblical parallels, anyone?) and is subsequently expelled from his tribe. In yet another parody of Jerry Maguire, Black announces that he intends to explore the outside world and invites anyone willing to accompany him. Cera (playing essentially the same milquetoast from Juno and Superbad) volunteers, and the two are off on their adventure.

The movie doesn’t seem to have much of a story, as the two of them meet various Biblical icons, including David Cross and Paul Rudd as Cain and Abel, respectively, Hank Azaria as Abraham, and Christopher Mintz-Pleasse as Isaac. Mintz-Pleasse had my sides splitting as McLovin, so I naturally thought any movie with him in it wouldn’t be all bad. Unfortunately, his comedic talents are wasted, as he has maybe nine or ten lines throughout the movie.

Black and Cera do what they can with the material, but they can’t save the script. We’re treated to a story that plays mostly like a series of unfinished Monty Python sketches, along with Cera urinating on himself, Cera rubbing oil on a hairy Oliver Platt, and a couple of smiles, but no laughs. The rowdy high schoolers who populated the theater remained mostly silent throughout the ordeal. I remained silent during, and after the movie, wondering to myself why I had paid 12 bucks to see it on opening weekend. Although it’s nearly out of the theaters, if you haven’t seen it, I’ll steer you away from renting it on DVD or even catching it on cable. See a Monty Python film or History of the World, Part I instead.

Review:

Up follows the adventure of Carl Fredricksen (voiced by Edward Asner) and Russell (voiced by Jordan Nagai), as they set out on a trip around the globe in Carl’s house, which is floating thanks to thousands of helium balloons. Carl imagines this scheme after being relentlessly annoyed by construction workers for him to move, as his old house has become a bit of an eye-sore among the jungle of skyscrapers and futuristic buildings. Following a brief altercation with one of these construction workers, Carl is ordered by a judge to move into an assisted living community. Intent on keeping his home, Carl sets his plan in motion; however, he does not know that Russell, who is working for his “Assisting the Elderly” badge as part of his Boy Scout program, was on his porch when he lifted off. Together, the two embark on a wild journey to visit exotic locations as well as inadvertently forge a rather unlikely friendship.

Over the years, Pixar has been known as a powerhouse for producing comical, clean movies that are entertaining for children and adults alike, and Up is no exception. The incredible animation, aesthetically pleasing vibrancy and beautiful film score alone are worthy of positive reviews, but the compelling storyline and relatable characters make up the bulk of my praise. Up is not only a tale of adventure, but it is also a heartfelt story of undying love; this is evident in Carl’s unyielding desire to visit Paradise Falls, an exotic destination in South America that he vows to visit, as per his deceased wife’s request. This extremely realistic enterprise, coupled with flawless execution, results in a movie that is instantly relatable for viewers of all ages. Young or old, average movie-goer or film fanatic, you are absolutely guaranteed to enjoy Up.

Review:

Battle of the Smithsonian is the sequel to the incredibly lucrative Night at the Museum, released in 2006. This movie picks up a few years after the first finished, and now Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) is the creator of his own infomercial inventions company, home to items such as a glow in the dark flashlight. After discovering that his old museum is being absorbed by the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC, Larry abandons his hectic schedule to answer a distress call from Jedediah Smith (Owen Wilson), which is one of the exhibits that have come to life. Jed and his crew are in possession of the Tablet of Akmenrah, an artifact integral to Kah Mun Rah’s (Hank Azaria) evil plot to take over the world. This relic becomes the center of battle, as both sides attempt to secure it.

Ben Stiller’s satisfactory performance is greatly overshadowed by Hank Azaria’s adept portrayal of a flamboyant Egyptian monarch hell-bent on global dominance; Amy Adams’ role of the adventurous, precocious Amelia Earhart is also superb. Several other actors have noteworthy performances as well, including Owen Wilson, Bill Hader as General Custer, and Christopher Guest as Ivan the Terrible.

Despite its remarkable special effects, a predictable storyline and ordinary comedy amass to a movie that seems to please only children, not the entire family. But for its genre, Battle of the Smithsonian most certainly delivers with a pure PG rating and sparkling clean humor that is perfectly fit for younger audiences. These factors, plus the inherent celebration of museums and history, make for a movie that is certainly worthy of a parent’s approval.

Night at the Museum – Battle of the Smithsonian opened in theaters nationwide on May 22, grossing nearly $54 million on its first weekend. It is now playing in theaters across the country.

Review:

Ronnie Barnhardt (Seth Rogen) is the head of mall security at the Forest Ridge Mall. Equipped with a taser, mace, and a plastic badge, he patrols the mall walkways with a distinct display of pride and an explosive temperament. After months of emotional suffering, Ronnie finally has a chance to be a hero and impress the girl of his dreams, Brandi (Anna Faris), after a string of indecent exposure reports perpetrated by a trench coat-toting pervert in the mall’s parking lot. However things don’t quite unfold desirably, and Ronnie finds himself in a constant battle with Detective Harrison (Ray Liotta) in the pursuit of Brandi’s attention.

The movie tries extremely hard to be funny, with forced dialogue and awkward situations, but ultimately falls quite short. Seth Rogen’s performance is yet another testament to the expiration of his brand of crude, bumbling comedy (and I use that term loosely), a style that worked a few times but has already worn-out it’s stay. Anna Faris’ portrayal of a ditzy, image-obsessed department store clerk is performed with stunning conviction, and is the perfect role for a talentless actress such as herself. Despite these major shortcomings, Ray Liotta, Patton Oswalt, and Aziz Ansari deftly deliver the only chuckle-worthy scenes during their brief appearances.

Observe and Report is an absolutely atrocious attempt at black comedy, with far too many expletives, far too much nudity, and far too little comedy. The result is an excessively disgusting movie seemingly released to target 5th graders, a demographic where hearing the F-word ten times in two minutes warrants multiple views at the theater and claims of “It was hilarious!”

Review :

Paul Blart: Mall Cop was a good movie. I want to start off my saying that the movie for this trailer had really made me turn my back to this movie. But once again I ended up seeing it and completely I completely regret the fact that I didn’t want to see it before. Not to mention Kevin James is a great actor with any role he plays, and he definitely played this one up to par.

This movie really did feel like a slapstick comedy but it turned out to be more family suggested. I’d say it is definitely a great movie for kids ages 6-13! But this movie didn’t give much room for the adults to enjoy a more mature humor. I did like the beginning introduction to the movie and the entire story line; it was just some scenes I believe would’ve been better off left out of the theatrical version of the film.

Some scenes get really extensive and just flat out, isn’t funny. For example: [SPOILER ALERT] Paul’s excessive drinking scene gets really long and his dancing around on the tables wasn’t that funny. Also the statement “I don’t drink,” was overused and was not funny nor a lead to something funny.

I wish I wouldn’t have paid for the price of the movie ticket, and I don’t suggest it either. Unless you are taking children primarily to see this movie then I wouldn’t bother paying price. The movie, once again, isn’t my in my selection for purchasing the DVD unless I had a few children. A rental is definitely going to happen because I may rethink my decision, but for now I will ponder the thought of seeing this movie twice.

Review:

I must say this movie really came at a surprise to me! I did not think that Adam Sandler could actual endure an entire film without making an adult joke or saying a foul word. But in the end I was actually “surprised”…

All the actors not only did a great job, but they connected well. Although the movie did seem too focused on the story of Skeeter Bronson, I would say it pinpointed the success of the film.

If you see the movie then think back through the scenes and lines the character’s say you could see that a few re-writes could have turned this film into a full on “Sandman” movie; but it’s the thought that counts.

If you plan on seeing this movie be prepared to laugh at Russell Brand’s lines quite a few times. Adam Sandler does get some good one-liners in that make you laugh in the oddest way as if were 5 years old again.

Overall, definitely an acceptable movie to see, but I’m not going to be dipping my hands in for seconds unless I’m offered a free viewing.
